Paul Edwin Cummins

November 13, 1933 ~ November 21, 2021 (age 88)

Paul Edwin Cummins, of Mount Vernon, died at Baptist Health on November 21, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born on November 13, 1933, to Fannie Clark Cummins and Roy Cummins, the middle child of three sons and one daughter. In 1953 he married his love, Esther Corine Hunt and they had four children from their sixty-eight-year marriage, Paula, Joe, Mark, and Roy.

Paul was a retired co-owner of Cummins Lumber Mill which he founded and owned with his sons Joe and Mark Cummins.

He was an avid hunter of deer, bear, elk and for many years hosted hunting trips for his sons, friends and family to western states, Canada, and Newfoundland. He harvested a record setting elk in 2005 in Knott County, KY with a score of 319 6/8.

He was a devoted supporter of the Republican Party of Kentucky.

Paul was a former Rockcastle County Trial Commissioner, a court official authorized by the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts. He was not an attorney; his appointment was based in large part on his standing in the community and having a reputation that was beyond reproach.

In 1971 Paul filed a lawsuit Cummins vs. Parker Seal Co. based on his rights to worship on the days of his choice per religious freedoms of living in the United States of America.

Paul is survived by his daughter Paula Cummins Frizzell (Keith) of Lexington, three sons, Joseph Edwin Cummins (Joyce), Mark Anthony Cummins and Roy Benjamin Cummins, all of Mount Vernon. Three granddaughters, Melissa Cummins Fain (David), Stephanie Cummins Rader (Kevin) all of Mount Vernon and Jessica Cummins of Richmond, Kentucky. Six great grandsons, Noah J. Fain, Ethan J. Fain, Lincoln C. Rader, Ezekiel J. Fain, Calvin Paul Rader, and Henry Joseph Rader. Also surviving is Paul’s sister Helen Cummins Fain (Oscar) of Mount Vernon and brother Robert Wayne Cummins (Barbara) of Beaufort, SC. He is also survived by sister-in-law, Bonnie Daisy Hunt Winston, Cincinnati, OH. Paul was blessed with the love and devotion of many nieces and nephews who he treasured.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years Esther Corine Cummins (February 12, 1936-July 17, 2021) daughter-in-law Deborah Bishop Cummins, his father Roy Cummins, mother Fanny Clark Cummins, brothers Kenneth Ray Cummins, Norman Reid Cummins and sister-in-law Jeannine Cummins and nephew Sidney Keith Cummins.

The family would like to thank nephew Garry Reid Fain who has made this difficult time more bearable by his service and loving the family.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Ethan J. Fain, Noah J. Fain, Lincoln C. Rader, Ezekiel J. Fain, Calvin P. Rader, and Henry J. Rader.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that you consider a donation to the Christian Appalachian Project “Grateful Bread” program to attention: Grateful Bread, 3095 Richmond St., Mt. Vernon, KY 40456. Serving others with food and nourishment was one of Paul’s passions. He knew what it was like to go hungry or to crave good food and he never wanted to see anyone suffer.
