Rissie (Kirby) Ballinger

Rissie Kirby Ballinger, 79, of Berea, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026. She was born on February 28, 1947, in Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, to the late Jamie and Beatrice Kirby.

Rissie was preceded in death by her parents, Jamie and Beatrice Kirby; her brothers, Lester Kirby, James Estill "Toy" Kirby, Ernest Kirby, Tinnie Kirby, and Lee Kirby; and her sister, Barbara Sue Kirby. She leaves to cherish the memory of her loving husband of 27 years, Barry Ballinger of Berea, Kentucky; her son, Eddie Gentry of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky; her stepdaughters, Patty (Joe) Barron of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky, and Teresa Gentry of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky; her brother, Roscoe (Rosie) Kirby of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky; her sister-in-law, Ruthetta Kirby of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky; many grandchildren ; several great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; her lifelong best friend, Lena Bustle; and a host of extended family and dear friends.

Rissie never met a stranger. She spent many years serving the community as the cook at the local jail, where her meals and warm personality made a lasting impression on countless people. Whether at work or at home, she had a servant's heart and found joy in caring for others. Rissie found great joy in the simple things in life. She loved canning the fruits of her labor and preparing delicious meals for her family and friends. Her kitchen was more than a place to cook-it was a place where stories were shared, laughter filled the room, and everyone was welcomed with a warm meal and a loving heart. She believed that no one should leave her home hungry, and she welcomed everyone. The memories she created around those meals will be treasured forever. She was happiest when caring for those around her, and her generous spirit touched everyone who knew her.

Above all else, Rissie loved her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose kindness, strength, and generous spirit touched the lives of so many. Her love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Though she will be deeply missed, her family finds comfort in the many cherished memories she leaves behind and the lasting legacy of love, compassion, and hospitality that defined her life.
